The big ones

Avengers: Doomsday (December 18)

Marvel's next team-up, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who made Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. It's the biggest release of the month and the one most likely to sell out early showings. Dune: Part Three opening the same day makes December 18 one of the busiest dates of the year.

Dune: Part Three (December 18)

Denis Villeneuve finishes his adaptation of Frank Herbert's books. If you're catching up, both earlier films are worth watching on the biggest screen you can get.

Jumanji: Open World (December 25)

Sony's third film in the rebooted Jumanji series is the main Christmas Day family pick.

For horror fans

Werwulf (December 25)

Robert Eggers, who made The Witch, The Lighthouse and Nosferatu, has made a werewolf film for Focus Features. It's the most interesting horror release of the season. While you wait, his first film tops our list of movies like Hereditary.

Violent Night 2 (December 4)

David Harbour returns as a violent Santa Claus, with Tommy Wirkola directing again. The first film streams on Netflix. For more, see our best Christmas horror movies.

For the holidays

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: The Getaway (December 4, Disney+) and The Angry Birds Movie 3 (December 23) are the family picks. In a Holidaze (December 2) and Give Me Some Sugah (December 16) are Netflix's holiday releases. For older favourites, see our best Christmas movies of all time and our guide to Christmas movies on each streaming service.

For grown-ups

Behemoth! (December 4) reunites Tony Gilroy, who made Michael Clayton and Andor, with Pedro Pascal. Artificial (December 25) is Luca Guadagnino's new film with Andrew Garfield. The Debut (December 11) is an A24 film with Jesse Eisenberg, and Ink (December 11) is Danny Boyle's new film for Netflix.
