The short answer

If you loved Hereditary (2018), watch Midsommar (2019) next. It's Ari Aster's follow-up, and it does the same thing with grief, family and a cult in broad daylight. After that, try The Babadook (2014) for grief turning into a monster, The Witch (2015) for a family breaking apart under something evil, and Talk to Me (2023) for the newest film that scares like Hereditary does. In the US, Midsommar and The Witch stream on Prime Video and Talk to Me is free with ads on Plex and Xumo, according to JustWatch (checked November 4, 2026).

What makes Hereditary stick is that it's a family drama first. The horror comes from grief, guilt and things nobody in the Graham family will say out loud. So we've picked films that work the same way, rather than any horror film with a cult in it.

If you want the same director

Midsommar (2019)

Florence Pugh plays Dani, who has just lost her family and goes with her distant boyfriend to a midsummer festival in rural Sweden. It's set almost entirely in daylight, and it's still unbearable in places. Like Hereditary, the cult is the plot but grief is the subject. Midsommar moved from Hulu to Prime Video this autumn, so if you can't find it on Hulu, that's why.

If you want grief as horror

The Babadook (2014)

A widowed mother struggles with her son, and a creature from a pop-up book starts to appear. Jennifer Kent's film is the closest relative to Hereditary's portrait of a mother at the end of her rope. Toni Collette and Essie Davis would get along.

Don't Look Now (1973)

After their daughter drowns, a couple (Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie) go to Venice, where a psychic claims she can see the dead girl. The red coat, the editing and the last scene have influenced a lot of modern horror, Hereditary included.

Lake Mungo (2008)

A fake documentary about an Australian family after their teenage daughter drowns. It's quiet and has almost no jump scares, but it's one of the saddest and most unsettling horror films ever made. It's free on Tubi.

Relic (2020)

A woman and her daughter go to find her mother, who has gone missing from her house in the woods. The house slowly turns into something else. It's about dementia, and the last ten minutes are some of the most moving in recent horror.

Hokum (2026)

Damian McCarthy's new film, now on Hulu, follows a grieving writer at a remote Irish inn with a witch legend. It's less brutal than Hereditary but has the same slow pull. Read our Hokum review.

If you want a family destroyed from within

The Witch (2015)

A Puritan family is banished from its settlement in 1630s New England and sets up a farm by the woods. Then the baby vanishes. Robert Eggers' first film is about a family turning on each other as much as it's about witchcraft. His new film, Werwulf, is due on December 25, 2026.

The Lodge (2019)

Two children, still grieving their mother, are left at a winter lodge with their father's new girlfriend, the only survivor of a suicide cult. A dollhouse plays a part, as in Hereditary. It's free on Tubi.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)

A surgeon is told he must sacrifice one member of his family, or they will all die. Yorgos Lanthimos plays it cold and strange, which makes it worse. It's the pick if Hereditary's dinner-table scene was your favourite part.

Bring Her Back (2025)

The Philippou brothers' second film follows two siblings sent to a foster mother (Sally Hawkins) after their father dies. It's hard to watch in the way Hereditary is.

If you want the cult

Rosemary's Baby (1968)

A young wife suspects her neighbours, and maybe her husband, have plans for her unborn child. Hereditary's last act owes it a lot. It's on Paramount+.

Kill List (2011)

A former soldier turned hitman takes a job that keeps getting stranger. It's a crime film for an hour, and then it isn't. The ending is brutal.

The Wailing (2016)

A police officer in a small Korean village investigates a string of violent illnesses after a stranger arrives. When his daughter gets sick, it becomes desperate. It's long, scary and confusing in the best way.
