What you’ll learn

  • 16 A24 horror films ranked
  • Director and year for each
  • Where to stream A24 horror
  • Which one to start with

The short answer

The best A24 horror movies are Hereditary (2018), The Witch (2015), Midsommar (2019), Talk to Me (2022) and The Lighthouse (2019). If you've only seen one, make it Hereditary. In the US, most of A24's horror catalogue streams on HBO Max, with several titles also on Hulu, Prime Video and free on Tubi, according to JustWatch (checked October 30, 2026).

A24 is a New York film company that started distributing films in 2013. It's best known for a kind of horror critics sometimes call "elevated": slow, beautifully shot films about grief, faith and family, where the monster is often a metaphor. That label annoys some fans, and not every A24 horror film fits it. Green Room is a vicious siege thriller. Bodies Bodies Bodies is a comedy. What they share is a willingness to take risks.

Years are each film's first public screening, which is why a few are a year earlier than their US release. The Witch, for example, premiered at Sundance in January 2015 and reached US cinemas in February 2016.

The best A24 horror movies

1. Hereditary (2018)

After her secretive mother dies, Annie Graham (Toni Collette) watches her family come apart in ways that slowly stop looking like grief. Ari Aster's first feature is the A24 horror film people mean when they talk about A24 horror. It's also the one most likely to stay with you for days. Collette's performance is one of the best in the genre. It also leads our best psychological horror movies list.

2. The Witch (2015)

A Puritan family is banished from its settlement in 1630s New England and builds a farm at the edge of a forest. Then the baby disappears. Robert Eggers's debut made about $40 million on a $4 million budget, according to Wikipedia), and it launched Anya Taylor-Joy. The dialogue draws on period writing, which takes a few minutes to get used to and then pulls you in completely.

3. Midsommar (2019)

Aster's follow-up sends a grieving young woman (Florence Pugh) and her disengaged boyfriend to a midsummer festival in rural Sweden. Almost all of it takes place in bright daylight, which is part of the trick. It's a breakup movie dressed as folk horror, and it's very long. The director's cut is longer still.

4. Talk to Me (2022)

Australian teenagers discover that an embalmed hand lets them be possessed for 90 seconds at a time, and they start filming it for social media. YouTubers Danny and Michael Philippou made it for $4.5 million, and it grossed about $92 million, which made it A24's highest-grossing horror film at the time. Sophie Wilde is excellent in the lead. It's the most purely scary film on this list.

5. The Lighthouse (2019)

Two lighthouse keepers (Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson) are stranded on a rock off New England in the 1890s and slowly lose their minds. It's shot in black and white in an almost square frame. It's funny, filthy and very strange. Not everyone will call it horror, but it's unforgettable.

6. Pearl (2022)

Ti West's prequel to X follows a young farm woman in 1918 who dreams of stardom and won't let anyone get in her way. Mia Goth co-wrote it, and her performance carries the film, especially one long, unbroken monologue near the end. It's shot like a bright Technicolor melodrama, which makes the violence land harder.

7. Under the Skin (2013)

Scarlett Johansson plays an alien who drives around Scotland picking up men. Many scenes were filmed with hidden cameras and non-actors. Jonathan Glazer's film is cold, hypnotic and unlike anything else. Its score by Mica Levi is famous in its own right.

8. X (2022)

A film crew rents a cabin on an elderly couple's Texas farm in 1979 to shoot an adult film. The couple aren't happy about it. X is Ti West's loving tribute to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and it's more fun than most A24 horror. It started a trilogy with Pearl and MaXXXine (2024).

9. Saint Maud (2019)

A young palliative-care nurse who has recently found religion becomes convinced she has to save the soul of her dying patient. Rose Glass's debut premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2019. It's short, tight and ends on one of the most talked-about final shots of the decade.

10. Green Room (2015)

A broke punk band plays a gig at a neo-Nazi bar in Oregon, sees something it shouldn't and gets trapped in the green room. Patrick Stewart plays the bar's calm, terrifying owner. This is a siege thriller rather than supernatural horror, and it's brutally tense.

11. Heretic (2024)

Two young missionaries knock on the wrong door and meet Mr. Reed, played by Hugh Grant with a lot of charm and menace. Most of the film is a long theological argument that keeps getting darker. Grant was nominated at the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs for the role. The film grossed about $60 million on a $10 million budget.

12. Bring Her Back (2025)

The Philippou brothers' second film is much darker than Talk to Me. Two step-siblings go to live with a foster mother (Sally Hawkins) after their father dies, and her house holds a disturbing secret. It grossed about $39 million. Viewers who found Talk to Me intense should know that this one is much harder to watch.

13. It Comes at Night (2017)

After an unnamed sickness wipes out most people, a family hides in a boarded-up house in the woods. Then another family turns up. Trey Edward Shults's film was sold as a monster movie and turned out to be a study of paranoia. Audiences were split. Critics loved it.

14. The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)

A heart surgeon (Colin Farrell) is told by a strange teenage boy (Barry Keoghan) that he has to make an impossible sacrifice. Yorgos Lanthimos's film won Best Screenplay at Cannes. The deadpan, flat way everyone speaks is deliberate, and it gets under your skin.

15. Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)

Rich twenty-somethings play a murder game during a hurricane party at a mansion, and then someone really dies. Halina Reijn's film is a sharp satire of Gen Z friendship as much as a slasher. It's the lightest pick here.

16. Men (2022)

After a personal tragedy, a widow (Jessie Buckley) rents a house in the English countryside, where every man she meets seems to have the same face. Alex Garland's film is divisive, and its ending is one of the most grotesque in recent horror. Try it if you like folk horror and don't need everything explained.

A24's newest horror

A24 keeps backing new directors. One of its most anticipated 2026 releases is Backrooms, the feature debut of Kane Parsons, who created the viral web series it's based on. Read our Backrooms (2026) review. For other fresh titles, our new horror movies streaming guide is updated every month.
