The short answer
The best place to start with found footage is still The Blair Witch Project (1999), the film that made the format famous. If you want something newer, watch Late Night with the Devil (2023), which presents itself as the lost master tape of a 1977 talk show. If you want the one that scares people the most, it's usually Lake Mungo (2008) or Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018).
Where to stream is listed under each title, based on what horror sites and streaming services reported in October 2026. Streaming rights move around a lot, so availability may change. Check JustWatch before you plan a night around one.

The format's history, from Cannibal Holocaust to Paranormal Activity, is covered on Wikipedia's found footage page, and the genre-defining The Blair Witch Project has its own entry.
What counts as found footage?
A found-footage film pretends to be real recordings: home video, security cameras, a documentary crew, a webcam, a bodycam. Some, like Lake Mungo, are closer to fake documentaries ("mockumentaries"). The format is cheap to make, so it is full of debut directors, and when it works, the shaky camera makes you feel like you are holding it.
It also shaped a lot of internet horror. The Backrooms started as Kane Parsons' VHS-style YouTube series before it became a feature film.
The best found footage horror movies
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Three film students walk into the Maryland woods to make a documentary about a local legend. We never see the witch, and that's the point. Where to stream: HBO Max and Shudder were both listed in October 2026.
Lake Mungo (2008)
An Australian family's teenage daughter drowns, and strange things start showing up in their photos and videos. It's quiet and sad, and one shot near the end stays with people for years. Where to stream: Shudder (added October 1).
Late Night with the Devil (2023)
David Dastmalchian plays a struggling late-night host who books a possessed girl for his Halloween 1977 broadcast. It's mostly the "tape" of the show, with behind-the-scenes footage between segments. Where to stream: Shudder.
Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018)
A South Korean horror web series livestreams from an abandoned psychiatric hospital to chase views. The last half hour is one of the most frightening stretches in the genre. Where to stream: Shudder (added October 1).
[REC] (2007)
A Spanish TV reporter and her cameraman follow firefighters into an apartment building that gets sealed off by the authorities. Short, fast and loud. The American remake, Quarantine, is weaker.
Creep (2014)
Patrick Brice answers a Craigslist ad to film a dying man's video diary for his unborn son. The man is Mark Duplass, and he is not dying. Where to stream: Netflix.
Cloverfield (2008)
A going-away party in Manhattan turns into a monster attack, all filmed on one camcorder. The biggest-budget film on this list. Where to stream: Netflix and Tubi were listed.
The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)
Film students documenting a woman with Alzheimer's realize it isn't only Alzheimer's. Where to stream: sources disagree: iHorror lists it on Prime Video and HellHorror lists Tubi. Check before you watch.
Hell House LLC (2015)
A documentary looks back at a haunted-house attraction where the crew died on opening night. Mannequins have never been scarier. Where to stream: Prime Video. Its spin-off Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor is on Shudder.
Paranormal Activity (2007)
A couple sets up a camera to film their bedroom at night. Made for about $15,000, it became one of the most profitable movies ever. Where to stream: Pluto TV (free with ads) was listed.
Trollhunter (2010)
Norwegian students follow a man they think is a bear poacher. He is not. A rare found-footage film that is also funny.
New found footage in 2026
- V/H/S/Mixtape: the latest V/H/S anthology, on Shudder from October 9, 2026.
- Infirmary: bodycam found footage, on Shudder from October 2.
- Creature of the Pines: found-footage creature film on Screambox from October 13.
- The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007): the cult serial-killer mockumentary was added to Prime Video on October 1.
Tips if you get motion sick
Shaky footage bothers some viewers. Sit further back from the TV, keep a light on, and start with steadier picks like Lake Mungo, Late Night with the Devil or Hell House LLC, which use fixed cameras and interview footage more than handheld running.
