Survival stories like this pair well with our Backrooms (2026) review, the best psychological horror movies list and the best horror movies on Netflix. Netflix's own The Last House release notes on Tudum cover the production, and critic reaction is tracked on Rotten Tomatoes.

A movie where home sweet home phrases become a nightmare. One morning the family woke up and realised they were trapped inside their own house by an unforeseen entity. The Delgado family sees a strange storm roll in over Seattle and finds that none of their doors or windows will open. Their phones and internet are dead, and the neighbors are trapped the same way. As supplies run low, Ann and Jason ration everything, grow vegetables indoors and build a water system, while creatures move through the rain outside. The story follows the family over years, not days.

Ratings

  • IMDb: 5.5/10 based on more than 50,000 user ratings
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 22% critics and 27% audience.
  • Metacritic: 42/100 based on critic reviews.

The story follows a family whose lives are upended by unforeseen circumstances, leaving them trapped at home during lockdown. As time passes, the situation becomes psychologically and mentally challenging for the family members. The movie also highlights Stone Age times, when people had no technology or automobiles for chores.

They caught food such as rabbits, squirrels, and foxes with homemade traps and grew vegetables and fruits under the floor, showing how people in the past survived and lived. When the food shortage begins, it affects the daughter mentally and leads to rebellious behavior in the children.

Character Emotions and Development

At the beginning of the movie, everything seems normal. The children have fun and continue their everyday lives within the four walls, while the parents remain calm and the neighbors socialize using whiteboards. As the days pass, however, this sense of normality slowly disappears. The characters become increasingly anxious, frustrated and desperate as they realize that their situation may not have a simple solution.

The Family escape
The Family escape

The death of the dog from starvation becomes a major turning point. It forces the family to confront the possibility that they could suffer the same fate if they cannot find a way out. The children show surprising maturity by giving up their pets and choosing to prioritize feeding their family rather than complaining. Their actions show how quickly they are forced to sacrifice their childhood comforts to survive.

The parents initially remain calm and try to handle the situation logically, but the prolonged confinement begins to affect them emotionally. The father, in particular, starts feeling worthless and selfish because he believes he is failing to provide for his family. His decision to work on the car, even though it may never be useful outside, reflects his desperation to feel productive and regain some control over a situation he cannot control.

As the pressure builds, the family’s emotions intensify. Conversations turn into arguments, silence becomes uncomfortable, and their body language reflects exhaustion and fear. Yet, despite the growing tension, they continue to protect and support one another. Their emotional journey—from normality and confidence to fear, sacrifice, and desperation—shows how extreme circumstances can change people while also revealing the strength of family bonds.

What does this movie tell us about nature and species?

The movie gave us a message that we may rely on nature more than we have realised from water and oxygen to nature-grown fruits and vegetables. This movie tells us that even without the latest technology or a modern way of living, we can survive just fine with nature. The creatures that appear as unforeseen forces also believe in the human-animal relationship: if any creature has a good heart, they can communicate through actions and emotions; humans and creatures are dependent on each other. In the end, the creatures letting the humans go may seem unreal to some audiences, but it can also be seen that if we treat nature right, it may give us a chance to make things right. The dominance that human thinks that they have over nature is in conflict in the movie, as human does not shape nature; however the nature shapes human civilization. After 5 years,, when the family finally gets out, we see nature begin regrowing trees,, forests, and creatures that may have been extinct. This gives us the reminder that we don’t only need humans to start a civilization; side by side, we also need nature to its course so we can live and never run out of supplies.
