The short answer
If you want one movie tonight, put on His House (2020). Remi Weekes' debut is about a South Sudanese couple who flee war and get placed in a run-down English council house, and it is scary in two ways at once: as a haunted-house film and as a refugee story. If you want something louder, Green Room (2015) is a siege movie that never lets up. For a classic, Netflix added Hitchcock's Psycho on October 1.
Rechecked on JustWatch on November 4, 2026. Everything below was streaming on Netflix in the US in October 2026, based on Netflix's monthly additions and trackers that recheck the catalog every couple of weeks. Netflix rotates titles every month, so a film here can leave with little notice. Check the app before you settle in.

The scariest horror movies on Netflix right now
These are the ones to pick when you actually want to be frightened.
His House (2020)
A couple who survived a crossing that killed others try to settle in a house that does not want them. Wunmi Mosaku and Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù are both excellent, and the film saves its biggest scares for the moments when the past and the house become the same thing. 93 minutes.
Under the Shadow (2016)
Babak Anvari sets a djinn haunting in Tehran during the 1980s war, with a mother and daughter stuck in an apartment building as missiles fall. It is patient, and the dread comes from how ordinary the setting is.
Hush (2016)
Mike Flanagan's home-invasion thriller is about a deaf writer alone in a house in the woods when a masked man shows up. It is short, simple and very tense. Netflix added it on October 1.
Evil Dead (2013)
Fede Álvarez drops the jokes from Sam Raimi's original and keeps the blood. Jane Levy plays a woman trying to get clean at a cabin when something else gets into her. Very gory, so know your audience. New on Netflix in October.
Best modern horror movies on Netflix
Green Room (2015)
A broke punk band plays a gig at a neo-Nazi bar, sees something they shouldn't, and gets locked in the green room. Patrick Stewart plays the calm, terrifying boss, and Anton Yelchin and Imogen Poots make the trap feel real. Jeremy Saulnier directs.
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026)
The newest film in the 28 Days Later series. Nia DaCosta takes over from Danny Boyle, and Ralph Fiennes returns as Dr. Kelson. If you haven't seen it, 28 Years Later (2025) is also on Netflix and comes first.
The Menu (2022)
Less a horror movie than a very dark satire, but it belongs here. Ralph Fiennes plays a celebrity chef whose island tasting menu has a final course nobody expects. New on Netflix in October.
Under the Skin (2013)
November update: Under the Skin has left Netflix in the US. It is now free with ads on Fandango at Home and Xumo Play. Jonathan Glazer's strange, cold film stars Scarlett Johansson as an alien driving around Glasgow picking up men. Many of the street scenes were shot with hidden cameras. It is slow and hypnotic, and Mica Levi's score does a lot of the work.
M3GAN (2022)
A roboticist gives her orphaned niece an AI doll built to protect her, and it takes the job too seriously. It is funnier than it is scary, which makes it a good group pick.
The Black Phone (2022)
Scott Derrickson's adaptation of Joe Hill's story. A kidnapped boy in 1978 gets calls on a dead phone from the Grabber's earlier victims. Ethan Hawke plays the Grabber. The Black Phone 2 is also on Netflix in the US.
Mike Flanagan on Netflix
Flanagan made his name on Netflix, and several of his films are there at once:
- Gerald's Game (2017): a woman handcuffed to a bed after her husband dies, adapted from Stephen King.
- Hush (2016): the home-invasion film above.
- Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016): a 1967-set prequel that is far better than the film it follows.
- Oculus (2013): a brother and sister try to prove a mirror is killing people.
Classic horror on Netflix this month
Netflix's October 1 additions included a lot of older titles. A few worth your time:
- Psycho (1960): Alfred Hitchcock's motel classic, with Psycho II and Psycho III also added.
- The Sixth Sense (1999): M. Night Shyamalan's ghost story, with one of the most famous twists in film.
- Split (2017): Shyamalan again, with James McAvoy playing a man with many identities.
- The Strangers (2008): masked intruders and a couple alone in a vacation house.
- Crimson Peak (2015): Guillermo del Toro's Gothic romance with Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain. If you like del Toro's look, read our Frankenstein (2025) review; that film is a Netflix original too.
Fun horror for a group
- The Babysitter (2017): a 12-year-old finds out his babysitter is in a satanic cult. Gory and silly. The sequel, Killer Queen, is there too.
- Cocaine Bear (2023): added October 14. It is exactly what the title says.
- Crawl (2019): a swimmer and her father trapped in a flooding crawl space with alligators during a hurricane.
How we picked
We started with what Netflix added for October 2026 and what horror critics who recheck the catalog list as currently streaming, then kept films with strong reviews and a clear reason to watch them. We list the US catalog only. Other countries get different films.
